Joakim Wangendahl (Stockholm, Sweden) studied trumpet with Claes Strömblad, solotrumpet at the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and later at the Music Conservatory Gothenburg. He made his military duty at the Swedish Army wind orchestra as solocornet and leader.
1985 he started to study with Håkan Hardenberger, at the same time leading a professional brass quintet in the city of Falun and in 1986 with Bo Nilsson in Malmö. 1987 he continued his studies at the conservatory. He won the audition for solotrumpet at the Staatskapelle Weimar, East Germany in 1988.
1985 Joakim Wangendahl took his first lessons in Alexander Technique and went to London in 1992, to take lessons with Margareth Farrer, Glynn MacDonald and piccolotrumpet lessons with Michael Laird.
He took lessons with trumpetplayers all over the world, like Pierre Thibaud in Paris, Jay Friedman, Michael Mulcahy, William Scarlett (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), John Wallace (Philharmonia Orchestra London) and Konrandin Groth in Berlin.
In 1989 he became principal trumpet at Helsingborgs Symphony Orchestra and won the audition for co-principal at the Royal Opera Orchestra in Stockholm, Kungliga Hovkapellet in 1990, a position he holds until today. He was a member of the Stockholm Sinfonietta for 28 years.
He was teaching at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and the precollege and is specialized on the Suzuki teaching method for trumpet. In addition he is influenced by Alexander technique and learning methods.
After an accident, injuring his lip, Joakim Wangendahl concentrated on his rehabilitation of lip problems and made his way back. Otto Sauter has been of great importance in this, not only as a fantastic trumpet player and teacher but also as a trusthworthy friend.
As a long time member of "Ten of the Best", Otto Sauter’s fantastic mix of trumpet players from all over the world, Joakim Wangendahl has been fortunate to travel the world, meeting and exchanging ideas and knowledge with the top musicians in every city they visited. It´s a treasure he wants to share.
